Care gets better when patients and families are part of it.
Better Care Project is a patient empowerment initiative. We help patients and the people beside them understand their care, take part in it and speak up, so they can help raise the quality of the care they receive.
Who’s behind it
Karim Baz founded Better Care Project in 2026. He is a PMP-certified operations and program manager based in Germantown, Maryland.
From 2021 to 2024 he was an IT project manager supporting the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences at NIH, through Axle Informatics. His work there included the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C), a data effort spanning more than 70 institutions.
He is completing a Master of Health Administration at Purdue Global and is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Why we’re starting with senior living and long-term care
Families of older adults often manage a lot at once: several doctors, a move between settings, new staff at every shift and decisions that come with little warning. They’re usually the ones keeping track, and they often aren’t sure who to ask or how.
That makes it a good place to begin. The same approach, clear information, a simple record and a clear path for speaking up, can help anywhere patients and families need to be heard, and we expect to grow into other parts of care over time.
What we mean by empowerment
Understand
Knowing what’s happening, what your options are and what to ask. Our first plain-language guides are being written.
Take part
Keeping your own record and coming to each conversation prepared. Health Trail, our free notebook app, helps with this today.
Speak up
Knowing who to talk to when something isn’t right, and in what order. A guide to raising a concern is being written.
How we work
- Free for patients and familiesEvery guide and app for families is free, with no ads. Paid work for organizations is separate and never changes that.
- Our apps keep your information on your phoneNo accounts, and nothing leaves the phone unless you choose to share it.
- Information, not adviceWe help you understand and take part. Decisions belong to you and your care team.
- Plain language, large typeWritten for people who are tired, worried and short on time.
- We say what’s readyIf something is still being written or built, we say so.
- Apps on requestIf a family needs a simple app we can build, we build it for free and share it with everyone. How it works.
- Fair to everyone in the roomMost care staff work hard under real pressure. Speaking up works best when it’s clear and calm.
For small organizations
Small nonprofits and care organizations that support patients and families can hire Better Care Project for flexible, paid work: a simple app, a printable, or help organizing a process. Pricing fits small budgets.
We don’t take paid work that would limit what we tell patients and families. If we do paid work for a care provider, we’ll say so here.
Common questions
What is Better Care Project?
Better Care Project is a patient empowerment initiative based in Maryland. It helps patients and families understand their care, take part in it and speak up, starting with senior living and long-term care: nursing homes, assisted living and rehab. It makes free, plain-language guides and free Android apps.
Is Better Care Project free?
Yes, for patients and families. Every guide and app for families is free, with no ads and no accounts. Small organizations can hire Better Care Project for paid work, and that never changes what families get.
What is Health Trail?
Health Trail is a free Android app for family caregivers. It keeps calls, visits, incidents, medication changes, documents and questions for the next appointment in one private trail on your phone. It records and organizes. It never advises.
Can Better Care Project build an app for my family?
Maybe. Families can ask for a simple Android app that records, organizes or keeps track of something. If it’s legal, safe to build and fits the time available, it’s built for free and shared with everyone who needs the same thing, without any personal details. It isn’t guaranteed.
Who can help with a concern about care in a nursing home or assisted living?
Every state has a long-term care ombudsman program. Ombudsmen advocate for residents of nursing homes and assisted living and help resolve concerns about care, for free and in confidence. If someone is in danger, call 911.
Does Better Care Project give medical or legal advice?
No. It shares general information to help you take part in care. Decisions about health and care belong to you and your care team.
